Abstract
The propagation of weak discontinuities in a polarizable medium, when dielectric relaxation phenomena are taken into account, is considered. The fundamental transport equations governing the growth and the decay of discontinuities associated to the waves have been obtained and solved. Moreover a criterior for the "breakdown" of weak discontinuities is given
