The systematic validity of Zeilleria pentagona Seguenza is recognized through a study of its shell’s morphology and microstructure. Its variability is defined and some species are recognized as synonimous with it, that were instituted on the ground of populations from black limestones of Taormina and Longobucco Lias: Zeilleria subpentagona Seguenza, Z. carapezzae Di Stefano, Waldhemia oenotria Greco, W. vinassai Greco, W. sp. cf. subnumismalis Greco. It is dated to the Synemurian age and its infralitoral living environment is described as characterized by still waters protected by oolithic barrages.
