Abstract
The relationships between rudist morphotypes and physical paleoenvironmental factors have been analyzed in the Apulian Upper Cretaceous carbonate deposits to test the possibility of using functional paradigms (elevator, clinger and recumbent according to Skelton, 1979, 1985 and Skelton & Gili, 1988) in paleonvironmental reconstructions. The quantitative analysis conducted on an abundant variety of rudists from different environments and/or time intervals attempted to redefine the general distribution of paradigms and, consequently, the relative influence of the physical environmental attributes.
The new parameter, height to diamter ratio (H/D), has been introduced to provide a more precise definition for the different morphotypes for the «elevator» paradigm.
