Abstract

In agreement with other authors, the place of the ligament with respect to the axis around which the valves rotate, is reconfirmed as the main criterion for the classification of the nuculoids. The meaning of «external» and «internal» or «separate» ligarnents is defined with respect to the other elements of the hinge plate. Analysis of numerous specimens shows the existence, in the nuculoid forms, of both the above mentioned ligament models, which consist of three fundamental types. An alivincular-external type, similar to the primary ligament and to that of the larval stage of all the nuculoids. An a1vincular-internal type which is found in the nuculids and nuculanids, which is separated and with more or less well formed resilifer. Finally, a parivincular type. The analysis carried out and phylogenetic consideretions confirm the taxonomic scheme proposed by Mac Alester (1964) and Cox et alii (1969). It would seem, however, opportune to move the Neilonella and similar forms from the malletids to the nuculanids, forming the new subfamilies Neiloneh linae and Nuculaninae. The observations made, or taken from literature, make it possible to define a systematic detailed scheme for the tertiary and recent nuculois.An alivincular-external type, similar to the primary ligament and to that of the larval stage of all the nuculoids.
