Abstract
This is a preliminary report on the newly discovered presence of Tungsten ore in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.
Purest scheelite grains and crystals, more than 1 cm in length, were observed in most of the rivers and streams sediments of the slopes of the Peloritani range, where two metamorphic units are tectonically superimposed. The lowest one consists of a phyllitic association with abundant graywackes and iow grade marbles. It is well known for the many sparse veins and strata of Zn, Pb, Cu, Sb ores complexively forming a district, in wich it seems that no liaison exists between tungsten and antimony mineralizations.
In the overthrusting unit, consisting of higher grade metamorphites, the first recognized «tactite» outcrops on a very short distance, showing profuse sparse crystals of scheelite (1 cm). Finally Scheelite, and to a less extent, Mo-scheelite crystals were frequently observed in a number of sparse pebbles and cobbles of schistose rocks, mostly amphibolitic and quarzitic, in the bed of the «fiumara» of Fiumedinisi and nearby streams. Owing to the quite high content of scheelite, that in some cases exceeds 60% by volume, the prosecution and extension of field researches seem worthy to be encouraged and properly sustained.
