Some holaxonian gorgonians have the lower pan of their horny axis encrusted with massive calcareous deposits. These structures are easily fossilized. Fossils of this type are presently known from 5 localities in Sicily and Calabria. Similar recent forms are part of the deep-water fauna of the Atlantic but not of the Mediterranean.
