The reaction of $(\pi-C5_H_5)Rh(CO)(P(C_6H_5)_3$ with $ClCH_2CN$ gives $[(\pi-C_5H_5)Rh(CO)(P(C_6H_5)_3(CH_2CN)]^+$. This cationic complex reacts with nucleophiles such as $CH_3O^-$, $N_3^-$, $SCN^-$, $SeCN^-$, $Cl^-$, $Br^-$, $I^-$, = $C_6H_5SO_2^-$ affording neutral cyclopentadienyl complexes of todium (III). $CH_3O^-$ and $N_3^-$ react at the carbon atom of the CO group. The reaction of $C_6H_5SO_2$ gives $(\pi-C_5H_5)Rh(P(C_6H_5)_3)C_6H_5)(CH_2CN)$ formed probably by loss of $SO_2$ from a S-sulfinate complex. Never in the experimental conditions used the $CH_2CN$ group has been substituted. All the products obtained are stable and have been characterized by elemental analysis, and infrared spectroscopy.
