Abstract
The electrochemical behaviour of nitrite ions in acetonitrile medium has been investigated at platinum electrodes. The nitrite ion undergoes three consecutive oxidation steps with the formation of NO and $NO_3-$, of $N_2O_4$ and of $NO_2+$ respectively.
A fourth anodic wave, due to the oxidation of $NO_3-$ ions, is also observed but it has been established that $NO_3-$ is formed by hydrolysis of $N_2O_4$ as a consequence of the presence of water, at trace level in acetonitrile solvent.
