Abstract

Different forms of the equations of motion for open chain systems are investigated. First it is shown how Kane's equations follow from D'Alembert's principle thus establishing the equivalence between Lagrange's and Kane's equations. Next it is proved that Euler's equations reduce to Kane's equations provided only that relative coordinates are employed. This in turm emphasizes an equivalence which yields an outstanding mechanical interpretation of Kane's equations. The result and the interpretation are generalized by considering chain systems with tree configuration and chain systems with translation between the bodies.
