Serum thyroid hormones balance was investigated in 65 children, from 12 months to 13 years of age, receiving Phenobarbital (PB) from almost 12 months. The investigation is about T4, T3, TSH, which are all in normality in all the subjects, as before the beginning of the treatment as after 12 months. The patients in monotherapy with Phenobarbital present a statistically significant reduction (p<0.001) of the mean value of the Tiroxine and a statistically significant increase (p<0.001) of the mean value of both Triiodothyronine and TSH. The reduction of the serum concentration of T4 seems truly linked to the enzyme-inducing effects with an increased hepatic metabolism of the hormone, to the increased hepatocellular binding and to an increased extrahepatic metabolism. The PB influences the serum level of T3 through a faster conversion of T4 into T3. The serum concentration of TSH is increased by the pituitary response to the lower serum level of T4. In conclusion PB can induce variations in serum levels of thyroid hormones and of TSH, but these variations - in the examined patients - are in the normal limits.
