Abstract

Contribution of stereotactic neuro-radiological procedures and of magnetic resonance imaging to the "in vivo" anatomical study of cerebral sulci and convlolutions.
M.R.I. allows us to visualize cortical sulci and convolutions. But visualisation doesn't mean precise and reliable identification in all cases, because there is individual variability in these structures and because of the presence of "pli de passage", and secondary and tertiary sulci.
. Szika has demonstrated the possibility of defining indirectly the topograpfy of cortical sulci by means of Tele-Stereotactic-Stereoscopic Angiography. Indeed, Three-Dimensional ANgiography permits one to identify deep vascular segments ("laminae vascularis") buried in the sulcal walls of the invaginated cortex, thereby indicating the location, the depth and the direction of a given sulcus. We propose a procedure utilising these same "laminae vascularis" as a guide for directly identifying sulci and convolutions visible on M.R.I. images which are matched against stereotactic films using ventricular (bicoomisural line) and/or vascular landmarks. This procedure, in spite of some factors of errors, provides better anatomical knowledge on spazial organization of sulci and convolutions in living man.
Key words: Cerebral cortex, cerebral sulci, "In vivo" anatomical study, Stereotactic Neurosurgery, Stereo-angiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
