    Abstract

    Transport phenomena in systems of small tunnel junctions are characterized by charging effects when the energy $E_c$ associated with the transfer of a $single$ electron across the system becomes the relevant energy scale. It is nowadays possible to fabricate the so called Single-Electron-Tunneling (SET) devices, where charging effects are used to control transport at the $single-electron level$ whereas the electrodes tipically contain a macroscopic number ($\sim 10^1^0$) of electrons. Thermal and quantum fluctuations of the charge in the electrodes tend to suppress charging effects and have te be carefully investigated for a quantitative understanding of the features and of the perspectives of the physics of SET devices.
