Abstract
Prototypes “intelligent” membrane, whose properties are modified by external parameter (ex. temperature, pH, chemical agents, et.), can be realized by high energy ion beams irradiation.
Biocompatible polymers (PVDF, PTFE, PE, ecc.) are irradiated in oxygen atmosphere by Tandem (lithium, carbon, oxygen) in the energy range 1-100 MeV and dose rate in the range 1-50 kGy.
The anisotropic interaction of ion beam with polymeric chains, togheter to an etching process, produces micrometric pores. Immiscible chains are then introduced into these pores to produce active membranes.
Unlike the conventional membranes, obtained by chemical processes, these ones posses an high permeability which can be tailored by the irradiating parameters.
