Bioglasses composed of are very biocompatible and active if their silicon oxide content is of about 45% in weight. Inside a biological environment bioglass elicits a specific chemical response at the glass surface, which results in the formation of a strong bond between the tissues and the material. The coverage of bio-medical prostheses and implants with bioactive films improve their surface biocompatibility, osteoconduction and osteointegration.
A pulsed excimer laser, using a XeCl mixture (308 nm wavelength), 15 nsec pulse with, 20 Hz repetition rate and 200 mJ pulse energy, was used to photodeposit bioglass films on biocompatible substrates (titanium alloys and polymers).
Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) occurs in vacuum (Torr) and the glass etching is induced by fluences ranging between 0.1 and 50 J/cm^2. Deposition rates are of the order of 1 ?n/min.
Obtained films are stoichiometric, are composed by a micrometric granular component and, if deposition occurs on a heated substrate, adhere well to the substrate surface.
Applications of bioglass coverage concern the middle ear devices, dental implants, orthopaedic prostheses and cardiovascular devices with a restriction to devices with a low load bearing.
