Abstract

The current meaning of some concept and terminology used by biologists amd historians of science are discussed, with particular emphasis on <<morphology>>, <<structure>> (which in any case indicates a relationship between components) and <<function>>. Some examples are provided - including those from the A.'s research - concerning various structural levels of the organism (ribonucleoproteic structures in cells with active protein synthesis, placental structures in viviparity, production of immuno-modulatory substances influencing the immune processes at the maternal-fetal interface). The A. also discusses current opinions of the so-called <<order of the sciences>> and the complex relationship between teaching and research in Universities. Finally, recent data on the nature and function of genes involved in the regulation and control of development and differentiation (homeotic genes) are summarized.
