Abstract
A mineralogical and petrological investigation on the calcareous sandstones outcorps near Pizzo Illici, in the Mandamici area, south of Messina, has been carried out. These materials have been widely used as building material in that area mainly for the Cathedral facade. The excavation site has been located and microscopic determinations have shown that fluid circulation activity is responsible for a sulphide alteration processes which gives rise to the distinctive honey-yellow colour of the material. Information on the main alteration and decay processes is also given.
