Coordination of anions or donor solvent molecules to a dinuclear and mononuclear square planar $M( \beta \ -dik)(tmen)^+ ( \beta \dik=acetyIacetonate, dipm= dipiverylacetone, tmen = tetramethylethylenediamine, M=Cu(II) and Ni(H))$ leads to a continuous shift of the (visible) d-d absorption band in case of Cu(II), whereas Ni(II) shows a discreet shift. Far-IR vibrational spectroscopy was used to elucidate M-N and M-O vibrational modes. Spectrophotometric methods are used to evaluate formation constants for the consecutive coordination of one or two solvent molecules to the square planar complexes. Quantum mechanical calculations were carried out within the CNDO/2 framework and related to experimental data.
