Abstract

The correlation between structural and dynamic properties of proteins plays a fundamental role in the regulation of their functional activity. Moreover, in view of protein-solvent interactions, it is not possible to separate the properties of the two components but it is necessary to consider an overali entity, the proteo-solvent system, in which the structure, dynamics and function of the protein are often slaved by the physical properties of the extemal matrix.
In the past few years our group has performed experimental studies on the stereodynamic and functional properties of metalloproteins in different solvents. Here we report the summary of a series of recent works which point out that the conformational changes of the active site of some proteins relevant to their function can be influenced by the composition and physical properties of the external solvent.
