Abstract

The adiabatic compressibility of aqueous solutions of some alkali halides has been determined as a function of both concentration and temperature. A simple two-state model of solutions which retain the Gurney [Ionic Processes in Solution (Mc Graw-Hill, New York, 1953)] concept of water coordination shells and their overlapping as the salt concentration increases has been employed to interpret the data. The alkali halides examined show a consistent pattern for the size and compressibility of hydration shells as a function of ionic radius.
