Abstract

Square planar $Cu(acac)(tmen)^+ (acac^- = acetylacetonate, tmen = tetramethylethylenediamine)$ can coordinate donor molecules leading to a shift of the (visible) $d-d$ absorption bands. This shift depends upon the donor ability of the coordinated species. On the basis of this observations donor numbers of solvents and of coordinating anions can be evaluated. Deviations between donor numbers evaluated in this way in diluted (DCE) solution from those evaluated in bulk solvents are discussed. The obtained values are related to kinetic and thermodynamic results to show the validity of the obtained donor numbers. It is shown that the solvation of anions expressed in terms of $ \delta \ \Delta \ G_t_r_a_n_s$ can be separated into a term depending on the donor number of the transfered anion and a term depending on the acceptor number of the respective solvent. Beside the donor numbers of anions donor numbers for a series of solvents (mainly amines) are given which have also not been available before.
