Mineralogical, chemical and spectroscopical investigations have been carried out on molybdenite from three southern Italy occurrences related to hercynian plutonites. Quartz veins in “granites”, worked some time ago, showed Mo-content ranging between 0.1 0.6 %. The observed paragenesis was quartz, molybdenite, molybdite, ferrimolybdite, chalcopyrite and chalcocite. Chemical analyses (microprobe), gave results very similar to stoichiometric values for , with minor Cu content. I.R. spectra, all identical, had significant peaks at 1088, 848, 723 and 469 cm-1. Diffuse reflectance U.V.-VIS spectra showed maximum absorbance values at 344.4, 588.4 and 648.2 nm. Furthermore, X-ray data confirmed all the molybdenite as the 2H polytypes; the investigated occurrences appear to belong to a “porphyry molybdenum” deposit.
