Barbieri, Cesare (1986) The italian contribution ho the hardware of the HMC. Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti - Classe di Scienze FF.MM.NN., LXIV (Supplement 1). pp. 125-130.
The italian activities for the hardware of the HMC have been directed by C. Barbieri (Dept. of Astronorny, Univ. of Padova UPd); the UPd Team comprises: F. Angrilli and G. Bianchini (Inst. of Applied Mechanics, Un. of Padova), P.F. Brunello (Inst. of Thecnical Physics, Un. of Padova and Univ. of Udine), M. Coradini (Labor. di Planetologia, CNR Roma). Industrial contractors have been Officine Galileo, Firenze (Pr. Manager Dr. I. Varano); the funding agency is the Piano Spaziale del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche. Activities for the hardware have been concentrated on two elements, the plane mirror and the baffle (for details see Barbieri et al. 1983). Because both elements are directly exposed to cometary particles impacts, a preliminary study of the behaviour of severaI materials under bombardment was necessary. Those tests were carried out in two laboratories: the grounds of Difesa e Spazio (Colleferro, Roma) where explosive charges were used, and the linear accelerator of the University of Kent (see Coradini et al., 1982 and 1984). In the final selection of the materials entered also other considerations, such as the possibility to achieve a good optical figure for the mirror, the thermal properties, the total allowed weight, etc.
