Abstract
The main results obtained with the instruments placed on-board the Soviet Vega mission and the Japanese Sakigake and Suisei spacecraft are presented in a synthetic way. All results from Giotto are excluded from the presentation. It is shown these two sets of satellites have contributed to an understanding of the near environment of the comet, the composition of ionized and neutral gases, the properties and chemical composition of the dust and the main characteristics of the nucleus of the comet, including its colour surface temperature and its period of rotation.
