Abstract

Recent experimental results on the evolution of targets, simulating cometary bodies, under the action of energic protons are here summarized. The main finding is that carbon rich volatiles evolve towards a complex organic material which in turn, when bombarded at higher doses, is trasformed to a carbon-like material becoming completely different from the original matrix. The application of these results to comets shows that galactic or solar protons are able to build up large amounts of organic refractory material down to depths of $\sim$ 100 m in a comet. These results are compared with recent observations of Halley’s comet by Giotto and Vega spacecrafts.
