Among other results we determine the most general class of constitutive laws between the electric displacement and electric field by which the system of field equations is strictly exceptional [6]. By considering also the propagation of weak discontinuity waves into a constant state, we are able to compare the critical time when the wave amplitude becomes unbounded with the relaxation times of the dieiectric.A.
