Abstract
The nanotechnology is supposed to be the future for cancer therapy and has grown quickly in recent years. The nanotechnology owns several applications and it allows to fight cancer through early diagnosis, prevention, personalized therapy and medicine. Target-specific drug therapy of pathologies is the most important field in which nanotechnology could be applied. Site-specific delivery of drugs could be achieved only through an accurate nanocarriers design, considering all the biological barriers that a nanoparticle clashes after administration. Cancer is considered a disease where the right delivery of chemotherapeutics can make the difference between efficacious responses and severe morbidity. For this reason, a new field of “precision medicine” has grown up with specific aims that can be reached by new nanomaterials. „Next-generation sequencing‟ allows to identify the oncogene that is responsible for a class of cancers. This different approach is supposed to be suitable to get more specific diagnosis to treat cancers at molecular level. Indeed, RNA interference-based therapy is applied, using nanocarriers, to regulate the gene expression that is involved in cancer onset. Furthermore, gene expression should be accurately valued by patient-derived xenograft models which are genetically characterized. Recent research focus on a new way to make therapy that is based on targeted nanodelivery of siRNA/miRNA in combination with other therapeutic agents to increase the sensitization of cancer cells and to overcome cancer resistance. These studies highlight the importance of nanomedicine for treating metastatic cancer too, including the ability to transport complex molecular load to the major sites of metastasis, as usually happen in non-small cell lung cancer.
