Patterns in ash-covered melting snow

Abstract


The formation of regular patterns in snow covered by a layer of dark material is investigated as an instability phenomenon. A detailed analysis of the energy balance of the system highlights the prevalent role of solar radiation in such phenomena, and puts the base for further investigations.
