Abstract
It has long been known that Ovid, and especially his Metamorphoses, were among the favorite readings of American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. This article argues, in part with reference to other works by Lovecraft himself, that the Ovidian episode of Glaucus was an important source of inspiration for the short story The Shadow over Innsmouth, which centers on an evil sea cult and the narrator’s metamorphosis into an immortal denizen of the deep.
