Periodic Satellite Constellations for Local Telecommunication and Monitoring Services

Mauro Pontani

Abstract

Reduced signal time delays and an increased image resolution are main advantages of deploying satellite constellations in low orbits rather than in high ones.
This paper is concerned with constellations dedicated to a specific target location. All satellites are placed in periodic low orbits; other geometrical hypotheses (such as those of Walker constellations) are removed since at first glance too restrictive.
A correlation function is introduced as an effective tool to find all time delays between two consecutive satellite crossings over the target. Some optimal constellation configurations are obtained and discussed with reference to different operational requirements.
