On Multilane Traffic Flows

Andrea Corli, Rinaldo M. Colombo

Abstract

We consider continuum models for multilane traffic flows. These
models are constituted by systems of balance laws, where the
source terms take into account the inflow and the outflow of
vehicles in each single lane. The flow is described through
macroscopic quantities as the lane car densities, speeds and
momenta; the number of equations governing the flow may change
from lane to lane. The analytical properties of these models are
our goal: we give a general framework where global existence of
solutions can be proved.
