Come si deve scrivere un commento: precettistica e polemica in un passo di Galeno

Abstract

Galeno nei suoi scritti si sofferma più volte a riflettere sugli aspetti contenutistici e stilistici che pertengono la prosa scientifica, in cui rientrano i suoi commenti alle opere di Ippocrate. In particolare, il medico di Pergamo sostiene che non risulta necessario ripetere diverse volte uno stesso pensiero o argomento già trattato nella medesima opera o in altre, né si devono introdurre impropriamente argomenti che non risultano funzionali alla finalità stessa dell’opera. Questo, infatti, creerebbe un vizio di μακρολογία, di prolissità, che è spesso (ma non sempre) descritta da Galeno anche come un difetto stilistico, proprio di chi non sa ben comunicare le proprie idee. Tutto ciò gli fornisce l’occasione per criticare gli scritti di personalità a lui contemporanee e non. In questo contributo si analizza un passo del commento al VI libro delle Epidemie di Ippocrate, in cui Galeno affronta la questione della presenza, all’interno dei commenti, delle dimostrazioni (ἀποδείξεις) dei dogmi (δόγματα) di cui si sta fornendo l’esegesi.

In his writings, Galen repeatedly reflects on the content and stylistic aspects of scientific prose, including his commentaries on the works of Hippocrates. In particular, the physician from Pergamon argues that it is not necessary to repeat the same thought or argument several times in the same work or in others, nor should arguments that are not functional to the purpose of the work be introduced improperly. This, in fact, would create a vice of μακρολογία, or verbosity, which is often (but not always) described by Galen as a stylistic flaw, typical of those who do not know how to communicate their ideas well. All this provides him with the opportunity to criticise the writings of his contemporaries and others. This article analyses a passage from the commentary on Book VI of Hippocrates’ Epidemics, in which Galen addresses the question of the presence,within the commentaries, of demonstrations (ἀποδείξεις) of the dogmas (δόγματα) being exegeted.
