Comes, corrector e aristocrazia regionale. Il conflitto nella provincia di Cassiodoro

Abstract

Il contributo si propone di analizzare il rapporto tra due funzionari nella provincia di Lucania et Bruttii: il comes e il corrector, i cui ruoli sono stati intesi dalla storiografia in maniera intersecata. Attraverso le Variae di Cassiodoro e le epistole di Gelasio, è infatti possibile interpretare il ruolo di questi due funzionari alla luce della categoria interpretativa del conflitto e della sua mediazione. Questo approccio permette di superare una visione rigidamente etnica e di leggere invece gli episodi conflittuali che coinvolsero il comes e il corrector come riflesso delle delicate relazioni intercorrenti tra l’aristocrazia regionale e la corte di Ravenna. 

The aim of the paper is to analyse the relationship between two officials in the province of Lucania et Bruttii: the comes and the corrector, whose roles have long been seen as intertwined in historiography. Through the Variae of Cassiodorus and the epistles of Gelasius, it is possible to frame the roles of these two officials in the light of the interpretive category of conflict and its mediation. This approach allows us to go beyond a strictly ethnic perspective and, instead, to see the conflicts involving the comes and the corrector as reflecting the delicate relationship between the regional aristocracy and the court of Ravenna.
