Abstract

A gray clay formation dated in the lower Pleistocene, near S. Procopio (Reggio Calabria), has been examined mineralogically and paleontologically: this formation keeps trapped a thin ash level in the lower part of the series. This deposit, examined by particle size apparatus, chiefly consists of silty sands, while could be referred to sandy silts after the adding of a solution of $NaOH$. The main component is illite tending to a mixed-layer component as illite-montmorillonite, associated with quartz, calcite, $Na$-feldspar, iron oxides, micas, chorites and garnet: calcium carbonate, mainly organogen, reaches a 22%. Attemberg limits confirm a medium plasticity; some principal geotechnical parameters have been determined too. The thin ash level differs for some volcanic glasses and a few altered femics.
Paleontologically, these clays present faunistic associations very rich in planktonic as well as bentonic Foraminifera, Ostracoda and Mollusks with specimens that confirm the lower Pleistocene datation in the «Carata Geologica d’Italia F. 254 I $NE$». The faunizone exhibits clearly bathyal conditions in most of the formation except for n. 2 a and 4 a with much coastal fauna characterized hy Bittium reticulatum, Iuiubinus spp., small Ammonia infundibulum, Elphidium crispum. Datation in this work is referred to Emiliano, but besides well known species as Hyalinea balthica, Globigerina pachyderma, other much important chronologically are Globorotalia pseudobesa, Rectobolivina columellaris, Uvigerina bradyana, Astrononion salentinum Bolivina karreriana. Besides Foraminifera of sure datation some other are reworked from lower and medium Pleistocene, as Globorotalia crassaformis, Globorotalia puncticulata.
