Abstract
The group at the Osservatorio Astronomico/Istituto di Astronomia of the Università di Palermo has acquired a significant experience in the study of coronal plasma hydrodynamics, in particular concerning plasma confined inside solar coronal loops and $X$-ray flares. Careful attention has been paid to the development of appropriate numerical techniques and to optimization for execution on last generation hardware systems, like parallel computer systems. We are currently using a 2-$D$ hydrodynamic code, recently upgraded to describe the effects of plasma thermal conduction, to check the validity of the physical model which we are proposing to intepret the extensive and still unexplained evidence of redshifts in UV line observations, both on the Sun and on many other stars. We explain the redshifts as due to downward mofions of local condensations in the solar transition region, which we expect on the one hand to be brighter than the surrounding background region, because the radiative losses are proportional to the square of the density and on the other hand to fail down by gravity Our study is aimed at determining quantitative features which could constrain the validity of our model with a direct comparison to observations available at the moment, and at proposing possible diagnostics for future observations.
