Abstract
The dynamic of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions is governed by a combination of electrostatic and hydrodynamic interactions. For time scales, which are resolved in quasi-elastic light scattering experiments, the dynamical properties can be calculated from the Smoluchowski equation for the distribution function in the configuration space of the colloidal particles. Results are presented for the short-time dynamics which show that hydrodynamic effects can be substantially larger in charge-stabilized systems than in suspensions of uncharged hard spheres. These results are found to be in very good agreement with experiments.
