Abstract
This paper deals with the use of lichens as heavy metals indicators both for geochemical and ore minerals prospection.
This biogeochemical method has been applied in a selected area from north-eastern Sicily (Peloritani Mts.), where several ore deposits of different sulphides occur.
The analytical results obtained by means of combined INAA and ICAP techniques, have shown that epilithic (saxicolous) lichens can be used for distinguishing different minerogenetic events on the basis of different mineralogical parageneis. Simple "strata-bound" Pb and Zn sulphide ores in quartzfluorine gangue, can be effectively separated from Cu, As, Sb complex sulphosalts in quartz-carbonatic gangue, belonging to hydrothermal vein system ore bodies.
